The National Institute for Environmental Studies has been promoting the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT, Japanese nickname is “Ibuki”; Earth observation satellite) Series Project, jointly with the Ministry of the Environment and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

The Satellite Observation Center, which is responsible for implementing the “Satellite Observation Project”, observes global atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and related species using the GOSAT Series, and conducts research to understand the distribution and variability of these concentrations and the global carbon cycle. We also carry out research on the verification of GHG emissions and GHG emissions reduction activities, with the goal of utilizing the obtained results for environmental measures.
