About the Japan Greenhouse Gas Center

The Japan Greenhouse Gas Center (Japan GHG Center) aims to consolidate GHG-related information and scientific findings generated by relevant organizations through strengthened collaboration with partners in Japan and abroad, thereby establishing a foundation for sustained and strategic efforts to reduce GHG emissions. The Center will communicate Japan’s initiatives globally and contribute to the development of international frameworks, including those for standardization, thereby enhancing the societal value of participating organizations.

The Japan GHG Center is a voluntary collaborative body established under a basic agreement among the participating parties. The agreement defines the framework for collaboration and the respective institutional roles of the participating parties. Furthermore, the Center’s concept paper outlining its vision, missions and key activities has been endorsed by a wide range of organizations, including governmental bodies, research institutes, universities, private-sector organizations, and other operational agencies involved in GHG-related policymaking, research and development, education and human resource development, observations, and inventory compilation. This website serves as a platform for disseminating information on Japan’s GHG-related activities, including data provision, the sharing of research findings, and collaborative research projects. The Japan Greenhouse Gas Center Office, located within the Earth System Division of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), serves as the secretariat of the Center.

Vision:

An All-Japan collaborative initiative across multiple organizations to accelerate global climate change mitigation and achieve early decarbonization

Missions:

Contribute to improving the understanding and prediction of GHG distributions and cycles by standardizing and advancing monitoring and measurement technologies for GHG concentrations
Improve the accuracy and reliability of GHG inventories by promoting integrated assessments, including comparisons of top-down estimates of GHG emissions and removals (fluxes) derived from observations and model analyses, with bottom-up GHG inventories
Contribute to international initiatives aimed at mitigating global climate change, such as the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake, the WMO Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W), and the UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (UNEP IMEO), by utilizing and integrating the information and scientific findings generated through the missions described in the preceding two paragraphs
Communicate the latest and most accurate scientific findings and information effectively to domestic and international stakeholders, including research community, policymakers, private companies, and non-governmental organizations, thereby contributing to the development of international rules, policymaking, and business applications
Support and promote the development of next-generation human resources
