NIES and MOEJ have, through the use of global greenhouse gas (GHG) data from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) series, contributed to the promotion of decarbonization actions in Japan and abroad, including public outreach on climate science and the wider use of satellite data by the private sector. More recently, high-spatial-resolution data from GOSAT-GW, one year after its launch, have been added to the long-term satellite observation record established by GOSAT and GOSAT-2 since 2009, together with precise in-situ observations from ground-based, ship-based, and aircraft platforms. In addition, the Japan Greenhouse Gas Center was established to consolidate and disseminate GHG observation data held by universities, research institutes, and government agencies, as well as scientific knowledge derived from their analyses and assessments. Through these efforts, Japan aims to further promote robust science-based decarbonization actions. This session will present the latest developments in these initiatives and discuss prospects for the societal implementation and business applications of GOSAT data.
